Back when I was guiding full-time, the era of the big box (fly box that is) was still not upon us. I carried three or four large CF style boxes with middle leafs, and those boxes stayed full most of the time. Honestly, I would usually wind up guiding out of a puck of flies I threw together on my way out the shop door. Once my guiding days were behind me I had big dreams of tying flies all the time and filling up the new big boxes with row upon row of neatly arranged flies for any and every situation. I went out and procured myself multiple boat boxes and started moving flies from smaller (i.e less manly boxes) into these behemoths of the fly management age. I quickly realized that this new generation of SUV boxes wouldn’t fill up quite as easily or quickly, and two years later my giant boxes remain half full along with my heart. I honestly have no idea why I care, but I do. I know I could buy flies to fill these boxes, but somewhere along the line I decided that this would be cheating and not nearly as satisfying as playing the role of small third world asian child myself. The problem I’m running up against is that I am mentally unable to sit down and tie more than a dozen flies at a time, and a dozen might be a tad generous. I know guys who tie 6 dozen streamers a day for production orders. These guys are animals, in the sense that they are not human, also in the sense that their junk is animal-like. In lieu of my mental shortcomings, and their animal-like junk I think I’m going to ask them for some flies. Happy Thursday.
