Musk A Love

Yes Alice, there is a Musky Fly Fishing World Championships, and this year it’s in Tennessee. We here at SCOF are proud to be a part of this inaugural tournament populated by the mad max types of the fly fishing community. We’re not sure if this many Musky fisherman have ever congregated anywhere outside of Wisconsin, but we’re imagining it’s gonna be a lot like the first time all the little people got together on the set of the Wizard of Oz…bonkers. Look for a gonzo style feature in the next issue recounting all the ins and outs of this first Musky Fly Fishing World Championships. Does anybody know where I can borrow some wire leader and an Amish outfit? We’ve got a tournament to fish. Click here for all the tournament details.

If You Like The Glass…You’ll Love The Fist

20120129-215002.jpg

SCOF contributor and good buddy, Cameron Mortenson over at the Fiberglass Manifesto has partnered with Bug Slinger and Nomad Design to put out some bad ass new gear. We are fans of everything Cameron does over at the Manifesto, but the new militant style is truly up our alley. Glass power people…you must respect the fist. Get yours here.

Fishing Is Fun

Someone once told me that when you throw your proverbial Tilley hat into the fly fishing industry ring, you will fish less than  you ever have. I hate it when someone is right. We took a SCOF field trip to the S. Hoslton yesterday, and it turns out the trout are still there. We even got to touch some of them. We like touchin’ em.

Holding It Down In Hotlanta

Just got back from a weekend down at the Great Southern Fishing Show visiting with old and new friends. We met a lot of folks who had seen the magazine and loved it, and also met a lot of folks who had absolutely no idea what we were talking about, and then there were some folks who were looking for the gutter guard girl they had heard about…hopefully I was able to convert a few of those. Look for some Georgia content in the Spring issue…planning has commenced. Until then I made Steve take some pictures.

Taking It All In

It’s been a good week for SCOF. The new issue is doing well with over three thousand readers since Monday, and we have gotten mentions on websites the likes of Orvisnews, Midcurrent, Chi Wulff, Moldy Chum, and a bunch of others. To everyone that has already checked out the mag…thank you. To those of you that have posted the new issue on your various social media outlets…I owe you an aggressive hug which will be delivered as soon as I see you. If you have checked out the magazine, and liked what you see we have a favor to ask.If it’s not too much trouble, we would like to to recruit all of you to be our PR department. The hours are long and the pay is nonexistent…so it’s kind of like running SCOF. As our PR peeps we hope you will help us get the word out to those that have been living under a rock for the past week. So if you’re on a forum…give us a mention. If you have a twitter or facebook account…give us a mention. If you have a blog…give us a mention. If you see your Grandma on the street…give her a hug, she’s your grandma…then give us a mention. Every little bit helps.

Now that I am done recruiting ya’ll to do my job for me, we also wanted to remind everyone that we will have a SCOF  booth setup down at the Great Southern Fishing Show down in Atlanta this weekend. We will have all our merch with us as well as few SCOF contributors that have promised to loiter about.  I personally plan on meeting one of those Housewives ladies, and finding out what they’re daddies did to them to make them that way.

So in review, please help us get the word out about the new issue, and if you are in the Greater Atlanta area this weekend we’ll plan on seeing you at the show.

SCOf Winter Issue…It’s Alive and Filthy With Fishiness

Yes, the new issue is live and pretty good if you ask us. Click on the pic to be transported into the new issue and make your Monday a lot better than it was going to be. We also want give a nod of thanks to all our contributors who threw in on this issue, as well as all the folks that plan on reading it. We are amazed daily with the support we have been getting on our little slice of fishing life in the South.

I Seem To Have Come Down With A Wicked Case of The Website Updates

Hello Everybody (I am doing my best Dr. Nick impression as I write this). We are as busy as beavers with three tails over at SCOF HQ, making sure the winter issue will be of a quality you have come to expect out of Stevie and I. We are fairly confident that you should be able to ensconce yourself in Southern fly goodness next monday the 16th when the issue drops, that is barring any unforseen accidental three day benders I might happen to find myself embroiled in. Until then we have website updates to tide you over. We have swapped out the old for the new, and you can check out some preview pics from the winter issue (did I mention that it will be out on Monday?…Oh, I did…my bad). So go on, get to your messin’ on the website.

Hogs Love The Mud

Ran up to the S. Holston on Friday, with Scotty from Low Country Fly Shop, on what can only be called a marginal generation schedule. The lesson here is that high water ramps suck on low water, and the other lesson here is that Hog Island Boats don’t require ramps.

Holy Crap We’re Getting Professional

Couple of quick things fly guys and gals. We have updated our store with some new merch, and made that thing all professional like with carts, checkouts, all major credit cards accepted, and stuff. Special shout out to our boys over at paypal for holding down the block as far as e-commerce store fronts are concerned. We have also just made our first run at technical shirts. The fellas at Free Fly Apparel were nice enough, to partner up with us, to make a special edition SCOF bamboo flats shirt. We first saw these down at Low Country Fly Shop and knew we had stumbled onto something. These shirts are soft enough that I’m trying to talk the boys at Free Fly into making me a matching bamboo Snugee and banana hammock set…I got my fingers crossed.

So check out the new shirts, and buy your merch like a straight up gangster with our new paypal backed electronic store front.

2012 Is Going to Be SCOFtastic

Another new year has come and gone, and I for one am ready to get on with it. The it being, fishing more in 2012 then I did in 2011 (with a special emphasis on scoring my two-year old son his first trout on the fly). It being a new year and all I was going through my 2012 calendar and realized that we have a lot of stuff going on this year. Just so no one says I didn’t fill them in on SCOF goings ons, here is what will be going down in no particular order:

  • Winter Issue. The new winter issue is dominating all our hopes and dreams at this point. There is a ton of work left, but fear not. It’s going to be pretty sick with a special emphasis on southern fried road trips. Look for the new issue around the middle of January.
  • The Great Southern Fishing Show. The SCOF Roadshow will be heading to Atlanta on the weekend of January 21st. If you are anywhere within a 100 mile radius of Atlanta that weekend you owe it to yourself to come on by our booth and hang out. SCOF contributors, merch, and awkward conversation should be plentiful.
  • 2nd Annual Tie One On A Thon Benefiting Project Healing Waters. The first one was so nice we thought we should do it twice. Sponsors are being cozied up to, vices are being polished, and we will have a lot more details coming in the next couple of weeks. But go ahead and block off late February to join us for what has become the best,”fly tying charity event that incorporates local microbrews, and takes place in Steve’s art studio” ever organized.

…and that’s just the next couple of months. Keep checking back because we have plenty of other stuff in the works.
