Wednesday’s Will Now Be Known As…Just The Tip Wednesdays

I wanted to use this title in the mag for the “Stratergizing” section but thought it might be a little much, but for the blog it seems just about right. I realized this morning that I am guilty of too often tickling the funny bone, and not often enough giving the old brain a tickle, so the idea of Just the Tip Wednesdays was born. From now till eternity we will use the middle of the week to share some of our limited knowledge about the technical aspects of fishing in the South in the form of a tip. Now I know it’s hard to believe, but I actually am a full-time fly fishing guide who spends close to two hundred days on the water guiding, scouting, and some days just playing grab ass with fish. So here we go folks…Just the Tip….

When streamer fishing for trout or any other species try using a non slip loop knot to give your flies more action. By adding the loop into the system your streamers will swim with more motion than if they were tied with a knot that bound them to the end of the leader like an improved cinch knot.

Wow, that felt good, I haven’t been that serious in years…so welcome to Just The Tip Wednesdays…we hope you come back.

Find the new coozies in The SCOF store and get a free coozie if you order two T-Shirts. Tune in next week when we premiere our new line of SCOF juicers.

It’s Good To Have Friends

With October banging on the door, we here at Southern Culture on The Fly figure we have way too much to do and not enough time. So in the time honored tradition of mooching off our friends who are way more talented than us, we have put the call out to some like minded individuals to take care of the the tying for our upcoming Albie trip at the end of the month. We figure when you have friends that tie like this, why even mess around? Above is a little sneak peek from Thomas Harvey’s vice that is tentatively being called, “Harvey’s Harker Whore”. Whatever he calls it, you can be sure we’ll have a box full in every color ready to bury in the back of our heads with poor casting. Make sure you check out the Fall Issue for a fly tying video from Thomas, which I can guarantee won’t disappoint.

WNC Fly Fish Expo…We’re Here and We’re…Nope, Wrong Catch Phrase

It’s been a little quiet on the blog lately, but rest assured Steve and I haven’t absconded to greener pastures. The fall issue is going to be out late October/early November, and much to our surprise  it actually requires a boat load of time to throw together…who knew? Today however we are pleased to announce that, by sheer pluck and moxy, we have secured ourselves a booth at the WNC Fly Fishing Expo in Asheville on November 5th and 6th. This will probably be the first time we poke our heads out after the first issue is released and we are planning on bringing the whole SCOF Roadshow. “What is involved in the SCOF Roadshow?” you might ask. Well let me tell you. We’re not really sure yet, but we’re thinking your favorite SCOF contributors hanging out, fly tying demonstrations by, SCOF resident fur and feather twister, Thomas Harvey of Carolina Fly, monitors for viewing the new issue on the big screen, t shirt and sticker giveaways, laser shows, dancing zoo animals in ridiculous costumes, Cheech Marin reprising the roll of Cheech from the popular Cheech and Chong film series…I might have gotten a little worked up there, but we should be able to pull off most of the earlier stuff on that list (I’m crossing my fingers on the whole zoo animal thing…F PETA for ruining our good time). So plan on being in Asheville that weekend it should be entertaining at least.

Blood Knot E-Zine Issue…We’re All Up In It

Oh kids, Blood Knot Magazine just released their newest issue, The E-Zine Issue, packed with contributions from some of the best on-line fly fishing magazines trolling the web-o-sphere today.  Which leads us to our next question, how do we wind up on the same contributor list as Brian O’keefe and the folks at Catch Magazine? Well, luckily someone over at Blood Knot must have been dippin’ into Grand Pappy’s medicine because we got top billing in the featured section. Check out our contribution to the lore of Mexican wrestling on page 77. Enjoy!
